Police believe ill health may have contributed to Ironwood husband-wife murder-suicide

The victims of an apparent murder-suicide in Ironwood have been identified.

The Ironwood Public Safety Department says David Mukavitz, 83, shot and killed his wife, Connie Mukavitz, 77, before proceeding to shoot himself.  Police say the two were in ill health, which may have been a contributing factor.

Sargent Adam Clemens says he received a call around 7:20 p.m. Monday night from a man who reported that he found his parents dead in the yard of their home at 88 Burt Street in Ironwood. Officers responded to the scene shortly after and found the Mukavitz’s dead from gunshot wounds.  Clemens could not say how many gun shots were fired, but did say two rifles were involved.

Police say some information is pending, and officers are continuing to investigate the incident.

The Ironwood Public Safety Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Michigan State Police, MSP Crime Lab, Gogebic County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Gogebic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Beacon Ambulance, Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, and the Hurley Police Department assisted with the initial response.
