Honor Flight Mission VI heads to Washington D.C.

Seventy-nine World War II and Korean War veterans from across the Upper Peninsula embarked on the trip of a lifetime Wednesday morning to see the memorials in Washington D.C. that are dedicated in their honor. The one-day visit is part of the U.P. Honor Flight’s Mission VI.

Eugene Cavicchioni of Iron Mountain was there in 1982 when the land was dedicated for the Korean War Memorial, but he has never seen the end result. The Purple Heart recipient is excited to see the ghostly statues that represent one of the squadrons on patrol in Korea.

“It means a lot, especially when you get to my age of 83. You can still see pretty good and hear pretty good, and you can understand and see what all your buddies did. These are your buddies, right here.”

The group is expected to return to the Delta County Airport at 8:30 tonight. Organizers are encouraging those who can attend to come out for a veteran-sized welcome home.
