Hancock high-speed chase suspect arraigned

A 22-year-old woman could spend up to ten years in jail after leading police on a high-speed chase in Houghton County.

Amber Smith was arraigned in Houghton County District Court on two felony charges: police officer fleeing/eluding in the third degree and motor vehicle unlawful driving away.

Smith allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign in Hancock and fled the scene after Michigan State Police Troopers attempted a traffic stop.  She fled northbound on U.S. 41 until police stopped her near Mesnard Loc.  Troopers said Smith did not have permission to use the vehicle involved in the chase.

Smith will be back in court May 14 for a preliminary exam.

She is out of jail on a personal recognizance bond, but is not allowed to leave the area.
