MTU Track & Field competes in Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Michigan Tech track and field team competed at the fourth Holst Invitational on the campus of the University of Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday (Apr. 12). The Huskies had 16 top five finishes on the day.

Shane McGrath won the 400 hurdles in 54.59 seconds, the third best time in school history. He was also third in the 110 hurdles in 16.31 seconds.

Steven Saliga was second in the javelin with a throw of 152 feet, 10 inches. Isaac Pringle was third in the 400-meter (49.98) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.00).

The Huskies placed eight in the top 13 of the 1,500-meter run. Kyle Hanson(4:05.34) led the group in fifth followed by Jason Saliga  (6th), Calvin Nitz  (7th), Sean Pengelly (8th) in the first pack of Huskies. Cory Zeutzius, Jonathan Kilpela, Dan Kulas and Alec Bolthouse finished 10th through 13th.

Graduate assistant coach Tom Scott won the 1500 with a meet record time of 3:52.44.

Wesley Jacobson (1:01.06) finished fifth in the 400 hurdles. Chrispin Johnston (11.67) was sixth in the 100-meter dash final. Brian Fisk (11.93) was one one-hundredth of a second back of Johnston in the preliminaries, finishing third in his heat.

The 4×100 relay team placed second, only seven one-hundredths of a second behind first, with a time of 45.52. Fisk, Allen Harrison, Jacobson and Johnston ran for the Huskies.

The 4×400 relay squad finished third in 3:31.37. Pringle, Benjamin Kramka, McGrath and Mike Tuski represented the Black and Gold.

Jake Wiedemeier and Jake Jurkowski placed fifth and sixth in the pole vault. Wiedemeier cleared 13-9.25 while Jurkowski had a jump of 13-3.5.

Kye Petermann was fourth in the discus (146-6) and sixth in the shot put (45-2.25). Matthew Vander Velden placed fifth in the javelin, throwing it 134-6. Jonathan Vincent tossed 127-4 for eighth place in the discus.

Mike Fisher placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 6-2.75 inches. Brendan Banker was seventh with a jump of 6-0.75.

On the women’s side, Jamie Dompier placed third in the 100-meter dash (12.78) and third in the 200 (26.22). Lauren Raiford (1:00.63) sprinted to a seventh place mark in the 400.

Deedra Irwin finished fifth in the 800 (2:20.65) and sixth in the 1500 (4:56.88).

The 4×100 relay team had a time of 53.67 good for fourth place. Dompier, Ellaina Cook, Hannah Schnack and Raiford ran the event for the Huskies.

Natalie Berryman was fourth in the javelin (120-0) while Ellen Hetcher was sixth. In the shot put, Berryman had a toss of 36-5 to place eighth. Jenna Burns and Kristine MacLean were 10th and 11th in the event.

The Huskies travel to Grand Valley State next weekend for the Al Owens Invitational.
