A 21-year-old Hancock man was taken to Marquette General Hospital following a high speed chase in Marquette Thursday, according to Marquette City Police.

At about 7:30 p.m., an officer pulled over a vehicle on US-41 South near Shiras Dr. for tailgating. When the officer tried to obtain the driver’s license and registration, the driver refused and sped off. A chase commenced, moving northbound to the Marquette roundabout, at which point the suspect driver circled back to head southbound.

The driver lost control of his vehicle near the Econo Lodge, rolled, and crossed oncoming lanes of traffic before the vehicle came to a stop on the shore of Lake Superior. He was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver did not sustain life threatening injuries, but was admitted to the hospital for observation. Marquette City Police officials say they are seeking to bring charges against the driver and that the incident is still under investigation.

The Marquette City Police were assisted at the scene by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, Chocolay Township Police, the Michigan State Police, Marquette City Fire Department, and Marquette General Hospital EMS.
