Keweenaw Job Fair set for Friday in Hancock

Get out your resume and freshen up because the first ever Keweenaw Job Fair is set for Friday at the Jutila Center in Hancock.

Finlandia University and Michigan Works! organized the event.

The idea for this event stems from an interest for a job fair that was local and didn’t concentrate on one particular job sector.

“We thought, why don’t we try holding one on our own? Just pilot it, start it off small. We contacted Michigan Works! and they really liked the idea. We knew we’d have to have them as a partner because that their area of specialization,” Finlandia University’s Dean of the School of International Business Kevin Manninen said.

Last year, the Western U.P. Michigan Works! realized there was a need for local businesses to get out into the community and let it be known that they have open positions.

Business Services Manager Robert Peters said the job fair is aiming to provide that opportunity.

“They weren’t getting out, they weren’t notifying the public. A lot of people didn’t even know those jobs existed and this is a way for everyone to get together and find out what jobs are available and what candidates are available to fill those jobs,” he said.

Resume writing and other job related assistance will also be available at the event.  The job fair runs from 12-4 p.m.
