New information in fatal house fire & domestic assault case

The cause of death and name of the man involved in a domestic assault incident that led to a fatal house fire in Hancock has been released.

Houghton County Medical Examiner Dr. Dawn Nulf says Dennis Foreman, 50, died of smoke inhalation.

The Hancock Police Department says Foreman assaulted his girlfriend before setting fire to his home at 930 Summit Street last Friday evening. Officers were told Foreman had a terminal illness and was not acting in his normal state of mind.

The Houghton Police arrived to assist, entered the home using a ballistic shield and found Foreman on the floor. Both he and his girlfriend were taken to Portage Health, where Foreman died. A Houghton Police officer was also treated for smoke inhalation.
