IRS phone scam sweeps through Marquette County

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be wary of an IRS phone scam sweeping through the area.

Officials say they’ve received numerous reports from the public about a group of callers identifying themselves as members of the IRS or U.S. Treasury Department. The majority of the calls have been reported in the Ishpeming area by a male with a distinctive accent.

In most cases, the scammer calls the homeowner on their land-line telephone from a 202 area code, advising them that they are delinquent with the IRS for an unpaid Income Tax or pending lawsuit. The caller requests the individual send thousand of dollars to avoid any future lawsuit and to settle their delinquent taxes immediately.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to never give out personal or financial information over the telephone.
