Suspect allegedly assaults girlfriend, starts fire in residence

Police responded to a domestic assault incident and fire involving a suicidal person Friday evening in Hancock.

The Hancock Police Department says the incident happened around 5 p.m. at 930 Summit Street.  When officers arrived on scene, a woman told police she had a head injury after her 50-year-old boyfriend assaulted her.  The woman said she took a gun away from her boyfriend and he had other guns inside.

Officers were told the suspect had a terminal illness and was not acting in his normal state of mind.

The Houghton Police Department arrived on scene to assist and both police departments entered the home using a ballistic shield.  They discovered the suspect had started a fire in the residence and was found on the floor.

The woman and the suspect were transported to Portage Health, and one officer with the Houghton Police Department was treated for smoke inhalation.

Police say the suspect died at the hospital, and the woman has since been treated and released.

The Hancock Fire Department also responded to the incident to put out the fire.
