No one was hurt in a fire at a home at K.I. Sawyer this afternoon.

The blaze started at about 1:30 p.m. at 489 Mustang Street. Forsyth Township firefighters received mutual aid from the Sands Township Fire Department and Marquette County Search and Rescue 131.

“Upon arrival, there was nobody inside (and) there were no injuries,” Forsyth Township Fire Chief Don Hutchens said. “We got here (and) the fire was confined to the kitchen. There was some smoke damage to the house, but the fire extended just to the kitchen itself.”

The Forsyth Township Police Department, Forsyth Township EMS, UPPCO and SEMCO Energy also responded to the scene.
The home was vacant, but that was scheduled to change today.

“There (were) people moving in, actually, slated to move in (today),” Chief Hutchens said. “There was stuff piled up on the stove, so we think when they were moving in, it was piled on the stove and that’s what started it, but there was nobody in it at the time.”

Firefighters are continuing to investigate the cause.
