Ski & Snowboard Rail Jam in Marquette Saturday

The U.P. 200 is launching this Friday, and visitors to the downtown area will have another spectacle to enjoy while they’re at it.The second annual Downtown Showdown Ski and Snowboard Rail Jam will be ready to roll this Saturday.

The Rail Jam will transform the 100 block of East Washington Street into a snowy paradise. Skiers and snowboarders are invited to bring their skills off the slopes and onto the streets of Marquette. The event brings in a variety of people from all walks of life, both as spectators and competitors.

“We just were looking for something unique and different to downtown Marquette, to the streets of downtown Marquette,” Marquette Downtown Development Authority events and promotions Coordinator Samantha Collins said. “And so we thought, well, why not bring the excitement of the ski hill to downtown? And so, this has really taken off in just its second year, and we have people that come from all over the U.P., parts of Wisconsin, and lower Michigan.”

An open jam will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by a competition for cash and prizes.

“We’re going to do the awards ceremony kind of Olympics-style with the platforms and the gold and silver and bronze,” Collins added.

Double Trouble DJs will provide the beat for competitors and Dia De Los Tacos will have plenty of food for everyone. In case this weekend’s forecast looks a bit too cold, a warming tent will be set up to combat the elements.
