NMU hockey wins vs. Seawolves

NMU WILDCATSANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Northern Michigan University hockey team picked up a 3-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup over Alaska-Anchorage at the Sullivan Arena Friday.

The win is the 10th of the year for the Wildcats as NMU moves to 10-11-2 overall with an 8-6-1 WCHA mark. The Seawolves fell to 12-10-2 overall with an 8-8-3 league mark.

Junior defenseman Mitch Jones scored his first goal of the season for the Wildcats at the 11:27 mark of the first. Jones scored on the power play to give NMU a 1-0 lead while senior forward Stephan Vigier and freshman forward John Siemer recorded assists on the play.

Dylan Hubbs evened the score for the Seawolves at 1-1 with a power play goal at the 14:35 mark of the first on a feed from Andrew Pettit and Chase Van Allen.

Jones scored his second power play goal of the game at 12:01 in the second period finishing a play from freshman forward Gerard Hanson and Siemer to give NMU a 2-1 advantage.

Junior forward Reed Seckel gave the Wildcats an insurance goal scoring at 12:21 in the third period to put the ‘Cats up 3-1. Junior defenseman Jake Baker and freshman forward Dominik Shine set up Seckel’s goal and earned assists on the play.

Freshman goalie Mathias Dahlstrom improved to 9-9-2 on the season recording 22 saves in the win.

Alaska-Anchorage outshot NMU 23-17. The Wildcats were 2-6 on the power play while the Seawolves were 1-6.

Northern Michigan completes action at Alaska-Anchorage at 11:07 p.m. (EST) Saturday.
