Torch Light Trek in Ishpeming tomorrow

The official kickoff to this year’s Noquemanon Ski Marathon is tomorrow night in Ishpeming, with the free Torch Light Trek for kids in grades K through 5.

Everyone who competes in the hundred-yard cross-country ski event will receive a ribbon for participating. A limited amount of free skis will be available on-site for anyone interested in joining in.

Last year, about 40 kids braved the cold to take part in the festivities. This year, temperatures are expected to hover around zero, but they’ll be plenty of fires like in year’s past to keep them warm.

“Torch Light Trek is held over at Al Quaal Recreation area; it’s held on the schoolyard next to Birchview School,” Bob Hendrickson of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame said. “It’s an opportunity for kids to try out skiing for the first time or to just come out and have some fun with the family.”

The event is put on by the Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, the birthplace of organized skiing in the United States. Admission to the museum is free of charge and it’s open every day except Sundays.
