An Illinois man is dead after a snowmobile accident in Houghton County.

Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post say it happened shortly after 8:00 last night on Trail #8 in Duncan Township near Kenton.

Two Illinois men were heading west when a deer ran out onto the trail, causing the two men’s sleds to crash into each other. Jeffrey Vandeneykel, 50, died at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse from his injuries. There’s no word on where in Illinois he was from.

The other man is being treated at Baraga County Memorial for non-life-threatening injuries. His name and condition are not being released at this point. Bay EMS, Sonco EMS, the Bruce Crossing Fire Department and the Duncan Township Fire Department assisted police at the scene.
