Two injured in Houghton Co. accident

Two people were taken to the hospital following a three car accident in Houghton County.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department said the accident happened around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday on M–26 near Twin Lakes in Elm River Township.

Police said a vehicle driving southbound on the highway approached a line of cars stopped on the road for a logging truck to turn left.

The driver of the vehicle, a 34–year–old Atlantic Mine man, was unable to stop and crossed the center line, hitting a northbound vehicle head on.  The man had to be extracted from the car using the Jaws of Life and was transported to Portage Health.

A fourteen–year–old girl, who was a passenger in the northbound car, was also taken to the hospital.

No one was injured in a third vehicle involved in the accident.

According to police, poor visibility due to weather conditions were a factor in the crash.

The Twin Lakes Fire Department, Adam’s Township First Responders, Hurontown Jaws of Life, Mercy Ambulance, and the Calumet Post of the Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.
