Gadgets help hunters during the hunt
The first full week of Firearm Deer Season is history.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority keeps a deer tally as motorists travel southbound from the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula.
Since opening day November 15, 2,622 deer have been counted southbound on the Mackinac Bridge.
At this point in the 2012 season, the total was 4,662, or a decrease of 44%.
Even though numbers are down, some hunters are still finding success.
Whether the target is a big buck–or filling a doe tag–there are some pretty clever gadgets to assist hunters in the woods.
“Game cameras continue to be used in the woods but also for surveillance, we sell a ton of game cameras and they have a lot of different models with a lot of different features to fit the customer,” MC Sports Manager Kevin Hayes said.
“Cover scents or attractants that they can put out to try and draw the deer in,” Todd Kauppinen from Wilderness Sports in Ishpeming said. “People like to try the next new thing to bring that big ten-pointer in or whatever it is they are hoping to see.”
In the safety department, hunters should always let someone know where they are hunting and what time they will be back.
It is also a good idea to take a cell phone along. Rescuers can use the phone’s GPS coordinates to locate a lost hunter.
