Hunter found after spending night in woods

UPDATE: 12:50 p.m.

A teenager from Dickinson County is safe after getting lost while hunting last night.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department says he’s 17-year-old Yury Hammar of Vulcan. He wandered away from his hunting blind off of Flat Rock Road in Ely Township and couldn’t find his way back.

Police say that once he realized he was lost, he stayed where he was and waited for help. His family called 911 shortly before 9:30 last night after he’d failed to return.

The search for Hammar took 10 hours, with first responders reaching him shortly before 8:30 this morning. Officials say Hammar was cold after spending the night in the woods, but he was in good condition and did not need medical attention.

A 17-year-old hiker has apparently been found in Ishpeming Township after going missing Sunday night.

Early reports are that the hiker was found shortly before 8:30 this morning in a wooded area off of County Road 581.

Personnel from multiple agencies were involved in the search. The heavy winds overnight apparently prevented a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from flying over the search area, so an emergency response team was called in to help with a foot search.

More information should be forthcoming later today, and we’ll have it for you as soon as it’s available.
