Selecting a temporary sheriff

Three Marquette County officials will have to decide soon who should serve as the temporary county sheriff. Marquette County Sheriff Mike Lovelace announced his retirement earlier this week, effective at the end of January.

Probate Judge Cheryl Hill, County Prosecutor Matt Wiese and County Clerk Peter Dishnow will have to choose his temporary replacement from among everyone who applies for the job. Undersheriff Jack Schneider says he plans to apply. More details about the application process should be released shortly.

The temporary choice will hold the job until next November, when a special election will take place. The winner will then serve as sheriff until the November 2016 election, when Lovelace’s current term expires.
