Hancock’s Almquist signs with Tech

Hancock high school basketball forward Alex Almquist signed his national letter of intent on Wednesday. He will play basketball next season for Kevin Luke at Michigan Tech.

The 6’7″ Almquist said it was an easy decision for him to stay at home and play basketball for the Huskies.

“I really was looking for a good academic school. I wanted to make sure that I got an education before athletics,” said Almquist. “(Michigan) Tech has a great program. I want to hopefully help them in the future and get a good college education.”

“We’ve worked quite a bit on his post game,” said Bulldogs varsity basketball coach Curtis Wittenberg about Almquist. “He’s got a great outside shot and I think that will be a big attribute for (Michigan) Tech down the road.”

Almquist was a Class ABC first team selection last season by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. He averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds his junior year for the Bulldogs.
