Celebrating the 50th day of school

First graders at Lakeview Elementary School in Negaunee took a trip back in time to the 1950s Tuesday.

It was a celebration of their 50th day of school for the year.

Kids learned about drive–in movies, hula hoops, and music from the bygone era by participating in fun and educational class activities throughout the morning.

“We are celebrating current events that happened in the 1950s,” First Grade Teacher Brittnee Balbierz said. “Each classroom is a different center. We have a sock hop, we have the diner.”

“In my classroom, we have a record shop, so we’ll be playing the records, and then students will be able to create their own record, and they’ll be able to decorate it,” Student Teacher Chelsey Pistulka said.

“It’s a lot of fun for the students to see what the 1950’s are like,” said Balbierz.

Students and teachers alike dressed up in 1950’s clothes, complete with poodle skirts, penny loafers, and letterman jackets.

They even got a musical lesson in hand–jive.
