Man accidentally shoots himself

An Iron River man is recovering after accidentally shooting himself.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Department says it took place at about 12 noon Central time Saturday on Forest Road 2130 in Bates Township, near the Perch River.

Police say 32-year-old Nicholas Kegley had been camping and hunting with friends and was waiting in his vehicle for a friend to meet him. While waiting, Kegley was cleaning a .22-calibre pistol to fix a sticking slide.

During the cleaning, police say Kegley accidentally loaded a live round into the chamber and fired. The bullet hit his upper left leg. He was treated at NorthSTAR Health System in Iron River and released.
