Kayakers rescued in Schoolcraft Co.

Four kayakers were rescued over the weekend on the Manistique River.

The incident was reported Saturday evening about 6:15 p.m. and police were told three adults and a 9 year old boy were lost on the Manistique River.

The group had reportedly put in at the Merwin Creek landing about noon Saturday.

A search team was put together, including Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office, Manistique Public Safety, Michigan State Police, Sault Tribe Public Safety, Michigan DNR, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Family members were also out in their personal vehicles.

After a three hour search, the kayakers were located about a mile from the Wyman Nursery in Manistique. Police say the four were a little cold and wet but very happy to be off the river.

The Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department says ‘Thanks goes to Regional Dispatch for their fine work on the radio traffic.’
