Chemical explosion injures Wisconsin man

One man was taken to the hospital after injuries after a chemical explosion in Marquette County.

Troopers from the Negaunee Post of the Michigan State Police say sixty-year-old John Groschopf from Bristol, Wisconsin, was mixing a chemical product called Tannerite together when it exploded in his hands.

Groschopf and two teenagers were target shooting in a gravel pit near Chief Lake in Republic Township Saturday afternoon when the explosion occurred.

Police say Groschopf was mixing the chemicals when they exploded, causing serious injuries to his hands and torso.  One teenager received injuries to his ears due to the loud blast; the other teenager was wearing ear protection and not injured.

The teenagers transported Groschopf on a ORV from the gravel pit to an ambulance on Fence River Road and he was taken to Marquette General Hospital.

Troopers determined the incident to be accidental after completing their investigation.
