Snack bar coming to Sawyer Int’l Airport
A new snack bar is coming to Sawyer International Airport in an agreement between Northern Michigan University and Marquette County.
The Marquette County Board of Commissioners approved a $10,000 agreement to have NMU run a snack bar at the airport. Currently, there are no facilities to make food at the airport. The $10,000 would provide improvements for the snack bar area, including new countertops and cabinets.
“NMU would provide a limited menu on a rotating basis, and obviously they’d provide some of their wonderful wears, NMU clothing, shirts and novelty items, along with some other selections of papers and magazines that the traveling public would like,” Marquette County Administrator Scott Erbisch said.
“Customers–the flyers– that are coming in, have that cup of coffee or that snack food or whatever, that’s a critical factor that’s been missing out there (at Sawyer), and that Northern coming in to fulfill that void, especially being as creative as they are in doing it, is really the important aspect here,” Commissioner Greg Seppanen said.
“If in year two or after that we’re able to actually recoup some money to offset some of our costs, that’s great.”
NMU will be running the snack bar for a one year trial period starting September 1.
