Blueberry Classic Golf Outing
Dozens of people braved the elements on Friday, to take part in the third annual Northern Michigan University Blueberry Classic Golf Outing. It was a day of friendly competition and fundraising at the Northern Michigan Golf Course. Players of all skill levels hit the links for a bit of fun and to raise money for the students of NMU.
“The money goes to support the NMU student flexible aid fund,” said Northern Michigan University Foundation Development Officer Mary Crampton. “It’s a fund that provides emergency help for students, things that financial aid doesn’t cover like daycare, and car repairs. We just want to make sure that students have the best opportunity to get into graduation, that’s what we really want, get past any of those problems that will keep them from graduating.”
“I love to see this kind of thing happen, and I really want to spread the awareness so that students are aware that NMU is stepping up to back them up in every endeavor,” ASNMU President Amber Lopota said. “There is financial aid out there for a lot of students, but there are always those situations that just you need a little hand up. And this is what that’s all about, is giving students the edge.”
This year’s event had 28 teams of golfers. Last year, the golf outing raised $25,000 and they hope to exceed that amount this year .
