Youth Golf Clinic at Sweetgrass

The professional golfers from the LPGA Symetra Tour are in Harris for the Island Resort Championship. Some of the pros spent part of their Wednesday teaching the basic skills of the game to boys and girls during a free youth golf clinic.

The pros worked with the kids on developing their swings, as well as the other fundamentals of golf, including chipping and putting.

“The best part about teaching the kids is that you know you were part of maybe getting them more interested in the game,” said Alejandra Llaneza, one of the pros who helped teach kids at the clinic.

“This was my first junior clinic so it was pretty fun,” said Britney Hamilton, a Symetra Tour who is from Michigan (Lake Orion). “When they (the kids) would finally get the ball up in the air, they had that look on their face. I know that feeling- I still get it when I hit a good shot,” Hamilton went on to say.

“Yes I was very excited, it was a great experience to go through,” said Kenadie Dagenais, a youth golfer from Escanaba.

On Friday, the pros will put their own golf skills to the test on the challenging 18-hole course. The players said that Sweetgrass is in pristine condition and they can’t wait to start the first round.

“Its really exciting to be back. This is my second year so I am really excited to get the opportunity to play here again. The Island Resort (Casino) does a great job to host us and we all enjoy this event very much,” said Llaneza.

“The course is awesome. The fairways are so lush, the greens are just rolling great, everything looks great so far. I love coming up here and playing in my home state, its really fun,” said Hamilton.

There will be one more golf clinic Sunday at noon.
