Cliffs idles mine in Canada due to forest fires

CLEVELAND, June 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE: CLF) (Paris: CLF) announced Friday that it has evacuated employees from its Wabush Scully mine and temporarily idled the operation due to the forest fires in the region.  The mine and processing plant are located in the town of Wabush in Labrador.

The Company stated that due to the rapidly changing wildfire, the safety of its workers and their families is its main priority.  Cliffs will continue to monitor the situation and the local Wabush management team will determine when it is safe to resume operations.

Cliffs has been working with Wabush authorities to provide volunteer assistance and earth moving equipment to create a firebreak at a safe distance from the fire.  The Company is also providing support with housing and cafeteria availability in Wabush and Fermont.

Cliffs employs nearly 500 people at its Wabush Scully mine.
