Early morning fire in Negaunee

No injuries have been reported following an early morning garage fire in Negaunee. The Negaunee City Fire Department was called to the fire at 327 Cherry Street at 3:50 a.m. IMG_3033

A person driving in the area saw smoke, located the fire and called 911. That person also woke up the neighbors alerting them to the fire and the danger.

The garage was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The fire was extremely hot, causing windows in the back of the home to blow out.IMG_3032

It took firefighters 10 minutes to put out the fire. They were on the scene for 90 minutes.  The owner of the home is Sandra Whitford. She is getting assistance from the Pigs N’ Heat Fire Relief Fund.

The garage was destroyed in the fire. A vehicle inside the garage was also destroyed along with the contents of the structure. A sauna at the residence was also destroyed. A neighbor’s garage suffered fire damage to the outside. Due to the fire’s intense heat, the IMG_3033neighbor’s home at 331 Cherry Street suffered damage to the siding.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Bell EMS, Negaunee City Police, Ishpeming City Police and Negaunee’s Electric Department also assisted at the scene.
