Students release fish into the Dead River

6th graders from Negaunee Middle School capped off a year long project today. The students were joined by members of Trout Unlimited in releasing salmon into the Dead River in Marquette.

The students took care of the fish from the beginning of their life cycle until their release today as part of science class. Students got a unique experience and learned about the importance of releasing fish into the wild. The program is a win–win for the students and the local ecology.

Normally the program also includes learning about the bugs and insects that can be found in the river, but due to the extended winter the students were limited to only releasing the fish.

A total of seven middle schools across the U.P. participate in the program.
