MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University women’s basketball coach Troy Mattson announces the signing of Kelsey Stangel from Kewaunee, Wis., to a National Letter of Intent. She will join the Wildcats in the fall for the 2013-14 season.

Stangel, a 5-foot-9 guard/forward from Kewaunee High School, led her team to back-to-back Division 3 Wisconsin state championships. She averaged 13.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game and was named the Division 3 Wisconsin Player of the Year. Stangel was also first team all-state, all-area, all-conference and the all-class MVP of the Wisconsin state tournament.

“Kelsey is a very versatile player who can play inside and outside,” Mattson said. “She is very strong for a guard and most importantly is a proven winner.”

Stangel joins early signee Breanna Gaspervich from East Troy, Wis., in Mattson’s recruiting class. The two met in the state championship game with Kewaunee winning 60-58 on a late bucket.

NMU did not have any seniors on the 2012-13 squad.
