NMU volleyball wraps up spring season
It seems like the Northern Michigan volleyball team has been on the road more than they have been at home in Marquette over the past month.
The Lady ‘Cats spent three consecutive weekends on the road taking on some of the top Division I and Division II programs in the Midwest, before returning home on Saturday to wrap up the spring against Lake Superior State.
NMU spent time downstate in Ypsilanti and Oakland, taking on programs such as Michigan. The Wildcats made the most of their short spring campaign, especially their freshman.
NMU had several players gain experience playing that top end talent, something that the head coach of the Wildcats, Dominic Yoder, hopes pays off for his team come the fall.
“It gives them (the freshman) a level of competition that they are not familiar seeing,” Yoder said. “Division I programs have four or five players that can really play. Division II might have two or three players that can really play, so it really puts a lot of pressure on them what its going to be like in the top five.”
“We are going to have a really good team this fall,” said Lina Lopes, an NMU senior volleyball player. “We have to avoid the mistakes that we made last season. I think that if we work hard on this, we will be ready for the fall.”
The spring season is now over for the ‘Cats. In just four short months, NMU will host the annual Green and Gold scrimmage on August 27.
NMU will open up the regular season at the Hemmingway Island Grill Classic in Pensacola, Fla. on September 6 and 7.
