Huskies win Hillsdale Invitational

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Despite high winds and cold temperatures, the Michigan Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams won seven events at the Hillsdale Invitational Saturday (April 13). The men’s team took the team title and the women finished fifth.
“Pretty excited that we won a meet, especially one with a high caliber of competition as the Hillsdale Invitational,” said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. “It was a great team effort with numerous student-athletes scoring in a number of events.”
Natalie Berrymen won the discus with the seventh-best throw in school history at 134-8. She also finished third in the shot put (36-9) and javelin (99-9).
Quinn Parnell once again swept the sprints winning both the 100 (10.88) and 200 (21.89).
The Huskies took the top-two spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Bradon Kampstra winning in 9:48.58 followed by Derek Brandt in 10:32.47.
Tech swept the podium in the men’s 800. Dylan Anderson won in 1:56.56 followed by Jani Lane (1:58.91) and Ben Kramka (1:58.91) who tied for second. Kyle Hanson was fifth in 2:00.32.
Nate Hood won the long jump with the eighth-best leap in school history with a mark of 22-5.25. He finished third in the triple jump with the seventh-best mark in school history in 45-6.25.
Jevon Maddox won the triple jump with a leap of 47-1.5, the second-best mark in school history.
Nathan Saliga ran a personal-best and the second-fastest time in school history to finish second in the 400 in (48.90).
Amanda Halonen ran the fifth fastest time in school history in the 5,000-meters to finish second in a time of 18:31.02.
Jared Berrymen finished third in both the shot put (46-3.25) and discus (148-5). His mark in the discus tied his career-best and ranks tied for sixth in school history.
Shane Severn finished fifth in the shot put (40-9.5) and 10th in the discus (128-4).
Ethan Miltenberger was fourth in the discus (143-2), and Jacob Wood was sixth (140-11). Steven Saliga was second in the javelin (155-10) and Wood was sixth (117-10).
Tech picked up a pair of fourth place finishes in the 1,500. Deedra Irwin ran 4:54.86 in the women’s race and Jani Lane ran 4:07.46 in the men’s. Kyle Hanson was 10th (4:10.35).
The Huskies capped the day with strong finishes in the 4×400 relays. The men’s team of Jevon Maddox, Jani Lane, Dylan Anderson and Nate Saliga finished second in 3:25.47. The women’s team of Dani Brzezinski, Melanie Hoffman, Deedra Irwin and Elizabeth
Wohlford finished sixth in 4:12.71. The time ranks second all-time in school-history.
Other top-10 finishes included: Melanie Hoffman fifth in the 100-hurdles (16.78), Tylor Rathsack fifth in the 400 (51.04) and sixth in the 200 (23.00), Nate Saliga sixth in the 400-hurdles (57.87), Ellen Hetcher seventh in the discus (113-9), Megan Smaby ninth in the 5,000 (19:48.85), Wes Jacobson ninth in the 400-hurdles (62.81) and Brent Cousino 10th in the long jump (18-6.5).
The track and field teams will compete at the Al Owens Invite hosted by Grand Valley State April 19-20.
