Tech signs five athletes

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech head coach Joe Haggenmiller announced that two women and three men have signed National Letter of Intent to join the cross country and track and field teams.
Jamie Dompier won two state titles in the sprints for Chassell High School. She won the 200 in an Upper Peninsula Div. III State Track and Field Meet record of 26.36 and placed first in the 100 in 12.7. She finished fourth in the 400 in 63.05 and led the Panthers to an eighth place team finish. She intends to major in engineering.
Julia Lean posted a pair of runner-up finishes on the track for Calumet High School. She finished second in the 1,600 (5:32) and 3,200 (11:51) at the 2012 Upper Peninsula Div. I State Track Meet. Lean posted six all-state performances during her career for the Copper Kings.
Sean Pengelly was a two-time state qualifier in cross country at Hartland High School. The Howell, Mich., native finished ninth as a junior (15:42) and 27th (15:49) as a senior. He finished 12th at the Michigan State Meet in the 3,200-meter (9:37) as a junior. He holds the Hartland High School and Livingston County five-kilometer records. Pengelly earned all-state and all-county accolades in addition to Kensington Lakes Athletic Association Award for Outstanding Athletic/Academic Achievement.
Kyle Petermann is a talented thrower from Clintonville, Wis. He finished third in the discus at the 2012 Wisconsin Div. II State Meet with a throw of 160-10 and 10th in the shot put with a toss of 48-6.5. Petermann is a three-time Eastern Valley All-Conference selection in the throws and was named the Eastern Valley Conference Field Event Athletes of the Year as a junior. He was the region champion in the discus and holds the Clintonville school records in the shot put and discus. He also earned all-conference accolades as an offensive lineman in football. Petermann is ranked second in his class and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to major in software engineering.
Jason Saliga is a distance runner from Romeo High School. The Leonard, Mich., native was a two-time state qualifier in cross country finishing 19th in Div. I as a senior in 15:41 over the five-kilometer course. He finished 74th (16:01) at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional cross country race. He finished 30th in the 3,200-meter (9:56) at the state track and field meet as a junior. Saliga earned all-state, all-region and all-county honors for the Bulldogs. Jason is the younger brother to current Michigan Tech track and field student-athletes Nathan and Steven, and his father Anthony was a member of the basketball team at Tech. Jason is ranked No. 1 in his class and intends to major in chemical engineering.
“We are very excited about these six student-athletes joining our programs,” said Joe Haggenmiller. “Their talents will help us grow and improve the programs.”
