Memorial service planned for NMU student

April 9, 11 a.m.

Two memorial celebrations have been arranged for Monica Matus, the Northern Michigan University senior art anddesign-secondary education major from Chicago who died last week (April 5).

A memorial service that includes sharing memories, poems and
songs will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home (526 N. Third Street, Marquette).

A sunrise flower petal ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Thursday, April
11, at McCarty’s Cove. The event will begin at the Coast Guard Lighthouse
(519 N. Lakeshore Boulevard, Marquette).

April 8, 5 p.m.

NMU officials say the case is closed in regard to the investigation into the death of a student on campus three days ago. An autopsy was performed Monday on the body of 22 year old Monica Matus. No foul play is suspected in her death, the officials said.

April 6, 5:45 p.m.

Northern Michigan University officials say the female student who was found deceased in her Woodland Park apartment Friday afternoon has been identified as Monica Matus, 22, of Chicago. Matus was an art and design-secondary education major and a film studies minor.

Although an autopsy is scheduled Monday, NMU Public Safety and Police Services says no foul play is suspected.

NMU Director of Communications and Marketing Cindy Paavola said in a press release Saturday that details of a memorial service are being planned and will be made available at a later date.

Northern Michigan University officials say a female student was found deceased in her Woodland Park apartment Friday afternoon.

The university is in the process of notifying family members. An investigation is taking place and an autopsy will be performed.

However, at this time no foul play is suspected. The identity of the student will be made to the campus after her family has had time to make all necessary notifications to their family members and friends.
