NMU football team holds scrimmage
For the first time during the spring season, the Northern Michigan football team did more than practice on Friday.
Head Coach Chris Ostrowsky and his staff conducted the first of two planned scrimmages.
After seven practices, the players were excited to lace up the pads against one another.
The defense took that saying to heart, as the still very young unit showed their teeth keeping the offense in check most of the scrimmage.
“We work on the base fundamentals everyday to improve that group,” said Ostrowsky. “Upfront they played really well. They read the football and played together. I am excited about the way our defense is shaping up right now.”
“It was a skeptical on the other side I tell you what,” said Keon Collier, a freshman running back for the Wildcats. “I’m glad we have teammates that are doing things like that because that is what being a team is all about on both sides of the football.”
Linebacker Morgan Stenz said that the team is definitely faster now than they were a year ago, when defensive coordinator Brian Newberry first installed the defensive system the ‘Cats run.
“We are extremely young but we’re dangerous and talented at every position,” the junior from Alpena went on to say. “Everyone has their own skill set and they’re out there just making plays.”
The Wildcats have three practices scheduled for next week before the teams next scrimmage on April 13.
Spring practice concludes on April 20 with the playing of the spring football game.
