Understanding Alzheimer’s disease

Caring for people with Alzheimer’s can be difficult.  ABC Ten’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Rick Allen tells us how one assisted living center is helping people understand what it’s like to suffer from the disease.

A senior living community in Calumet is using a new way to teach what people with Alzheimer’s experience every day.

Garden View Assisted Living has introduced a virtual training method that creates conditions similar to those that someone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease might feel.

Using special goggles, headphones, and feet and hand wraps, participants must enter a room they have never been in before and complete a series of daily tasks.

Sound simple? Not for people with Alzheimer’s.

The virtual Alzheimer’s training is available for health care givers, families and others wanting to know more about the effects of this disease.
