An Illinois man suffered a broken leg after a snowmobile accident in Houghton County Friday afternoon.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department says the accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. near Alston on Trail No. 12, about seven miles east of South Laird Road.

Allen Ehlers, 53, said he was traveling westbound on the trial when the snowmobile left the edge of the trail, got stuck in powder and lost control.  He struck a group of trees and was thrown from the machine.

Ehlers suffered a broken leg in the accident.  He was transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital by Bay Ambulance for treatment.

Police say alcohol is not a factor in the crash.

Bay Ambulance’s winter trail rescue unit and Laird Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
