Relay for Life: NMU students help fight cancer

Northern Michigan University students are spending Friday and Saturday indoors, but for a good cause.

The school is hosting its annual Relay for Life walk-a-thon fundraiser at Vandament Area.

There are 33 teams are participating this year in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  Teams had booths set up with crafts, food or games to also help raise money.  The theme this year is a carnival; activities included a ring toss and other similar games.

The goal this year is raise $28,000 dollars.

The number of students participating show that they enjoy helping out the community.

Anthony Wilson, a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon and Circle K teams said that participating in relay for life adds to the NMU college experience.  He added Northern students are always volunteering and everyone tries to get involved.

Holly Fremling, who lost her father and other family members to cancer, added that cancer is affecting people more often, and knowing that a large number of students care about the cause means a lot to her.
