LSCP rallying for Sawyer tower

The Lake Superior Community Partnership and other agencies are stepping in to help support the air traffic control tower at Sawyer International Airport.

They’re urging people to send a letter of support to prevent closure of the tower.

A sample call-to-action letter explains how Sawyer is important to businesses in Marquette County and that air service to the area is essential for economic and community development.

They’re recommending for people concerned about the tower to contact Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and Congressman Dan Benishek.

Today was the deadline for managers of airports with towers targeted for closure to send a letter to the FAA explaining why their towers shouldn’t close.

Sawyer Airport manager Duane DuRay sent such a letter.

The FAA will prepare a final closure list next Monday and is expected to make the list public next Wednesday.
