Explosion at Ontonagon Co. restaurant

An explosion inside Grandma Myrt’s restaurant in Mass City is still under investigation.

It happened Tuesday at about 1:10 p.m. Negaunee Regional Dispatch received a report from the Greenland Township Fire Department, the first agency to respond to the call. Assistance was also requested from the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office.

It is believed the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak, but it had not been determined where the leak originated.

The restaurant sustained severe interior and structural damage. Two employees and a customer were in the building at the time of the incident. One worker received minor injuries and sought his own medical treatment.

The explosion is believed to be accidental.
