MARQUETTE, Mich.—United States Olympic Education Center weightlifter Chris Young took home bronze today (Feb. 17) at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships in Foster City, Calif.

Young, of Oakland, Mich., who competed in the 85-kilogram weight class, lifted 110 kg in the snatch and 147 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 257 kg.

Young, who has been training hard for the championships, was pleased with his results.

“I felt really good going into the event,” said Young. “I knew if I could put a good snatch and a good clean and jerk together I had a chance at third. Coach (Vance) Newgard did an outstanding job coaching and he set me up for the medal.”

Also competing in the event, but falling short of the podium, were Annie Bengry of Marquette, Mich., and Brian Budd of Okemos, Mich.

Bengry ended the event in eighth place with a personal best total of 105 kg in the 53-kg weight class, beating her old record by 5 kg. Budd took seventh place by surpassing his personal best total by 30 kg, with a 235-kg total.
