Dollar Bay students win national award

A group of students from the Copper Country are finding themselves in the national spotlight.  ABC Ten’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Rick Allen reports from Dollar Bay-Tamarack High School.

Dollar Bay students are the winners of a national award for Outstanding Volunteer Youth Group.    The students of SOAR—Student Organization of Aquatic Robotics—designed an underwater robot to search for zebra mussels at Isle Royale.

The National Hartzog Award will be presented to Zimmer along with three of his students at a ceremony in Washington D.C. next week.

Most of these students knew very little of robotics before joining the project.  The experience of working on this robotics team has opened up a wide range of career paths.

The value of the project goes beyond what the robot can accomplish.  And this project is just the beginning.
