Two people are in the hospital after separate snowmobile accidents in Keweenaw County Thursday.

The first accident happened just before noon on Thursday.  According to the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, the accident happened on Trail No. 151, about a mile south of Eagle River in Houghton Township.

Chad Geer, 44, of Logansport, Indiana, was coming to a right turn as he was following other snowmobiles.  He lost sight of the trail due to blowing snow caused by the snowmobiles.

Geer drove off the trail and hit a small group of trees.  He was transported to Aspirus Keewenaw Hospital with major injuries to his left leg.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Department were assisted by Allouez Township First Responders, the Ahmeek Off-Road Rescue Unit and Mercy Ambulance.

The second accident happened in Grant Township about a half an hour later at 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Bete Gris Road and Sand Point Road.

Colleen Scheitz, 55, of Port Barrington, Illinois, was turning from Bete Gris Road onto Sand Point Road when her snowmobile hit a patch of snow-covered ice.  The snowmobile started to slide, and hit bare pavement.  Scheitz was ejected from the snowmobile and hit the roadway.  She was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital with head and hip injuries.

Deputies were assisted at the accident by Lac LaBelle Medical First Responders and Mercy Ambulance.
