Benishek named to Ag subcommittees
WASHINGTON, DC: A press release from his office announces that Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) has been named to the Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management and the Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy, and Forestry.
“I was honored to be named to the Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy, and Forestry and the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management. Both of these issue areas are vitally important to Northern Michigan’s citizens, farmers, and agribusiness owners, and I am looking forward to serving on these subcommittees during the 113th Congress,” said Dr. Dan Benishek, a general surgeon and Michigan’s sole member of the House Committee on Agriculture.
The Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management has jurisdiction over key issues for Northern Michigan such as agricultural risk management, including crop insurance, commodity exchanges, and specialty crops. Michigan’s First District is home to many of the nation’s specialty fruit crops, including cherries and apples.
The press release continues, “Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy, and Forestry focuses on soil, water, and resource conservation, small watershed programs, as well as forestry in general and forest reserves. Forestry issues are critical to Michigan’s First District as it contains three national forests, which total some 2.3 million acres of woodlands. Dr. Benishek has been a leader in Congress on forestry issues and has passed legislation to create jobs in Northern Michigan by ensuring more timber is responsibly harvested in federal forests.”
