Marquette, MI – XTERRA Triathlon has chosen Marquette to host an off-road triathlon as part of its national triathlon series.  XTERRA is a series of off-road triathlon races, (three-sport races which include swimming, mountain biking, and trail running). The XTERRA race series is the best-known series of off-road triathlons, and is considered to be the de facto world championship of the sport.

The event, to be held on Saturday, September 7, will take place at Tourist Park. Participants will choose from two distances. A “Sprint” course will consist of a half-mile swim, 10-mile mountain bike, and 5K trail run, while an “Epic” distance will consist of a one-mile swim, 30-mile mountain bike, and a 10 mile trail run.

XTERRA is working with the Noquemanon Trail Network to coordinate the event.  Interested volunteers should call 906-235-6861.

Since XTERRA is a nationally branded race series, XTERRA Marquette is expected to draw local, regional, and national participants.  “We could see some great – maybe even professional – talent come to our area,” said Derek Anderson, XTERRA Marquette Race Director.  “This is a major honor for Marquette.”

While the U.P. plays host to several traditional road triathlons, the off-road version is the first of its kind to appear in the area.  “Triathlon is a booming sport nationally,” Anderson added.  “And Tourist Park with the NTN trails should be a perfect venue.”

The race committee is currently working on developing a website for the event.  Xterramarquette.com will have course maps and registration information soon.  For now, race and/or sponsorship inquiries can be directed to info@xterramarquette.com
