Huskies have ‘bittersweet’ start to U.S. X-C Ski Championships

SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah – The Michigan Tech Nordic ski team opened the 2013 US National Nordic Skiing Championships with the classic sprint races Wednesday (Jan. 2).

Deedra Irwin was the top-finisher for the Huskies placing 36th. Rachel Mason cracked the top-100 finishing 73rd. Sarah Daniels finished 104th and Lynn Duijndam was 113th.

Raphael Bechtiger was the top-finisher for the men placing 59th. Luke Gesior was 91st. Matt Wong was 120th, followed by Kyle Hanson in 121st and Jay Woodbeck 132nd.

“Today was bittersweet,” said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. “We had good races, but we just missed qualifying for the heats. We will look to build on these races when we compete Friday.”

The team will compete Friday (Jan. 4) in the freestyle races.
