The Ishpeming Hematites football team celebrated its state championship one more time tonight with a banquet at St. Josephs Church.

Ishpeming Athletic Director Terry Roberts unveiled the championship banner that will soon be hanging from the I.H.S. Gymnasium.

From defeating Detroit Loyola for the schools first football championship since 1979 to the teams trip to New York, the Hematites had a year that they will never forget.

“The support that the community gave us this year was phenomenal”, said Ishpeming senior Seppi Bertucci.

“Just seeing everyone at every game, coming out at Ford Field and seeing everyone, five times as many people as Detroit had it was incredible.

When we went to New York, you guys supported us with donations and we had a great time there so thank you,” Bertucci went on to say.

“These kids made things go their way,” said head coach Jeff Olson.

“I say this and its not a discredit to them its not the most talented team I’ve ever coached, but its the best team I’ve ever coached,” Olson added.

“They made things go their way and they made their goals and their dreams come true, so that’s a big credit to them.”

Olson announced that Powerade will supply the football team with their sports drinks for many years to come.
