It started as an idea — Houghton County’s two major hospitals taking to the ice to raise money for youth hockey.

Aspirus Keweenaw and Portage Health joined forces again today to present a check to the Keweenaw Community Foundation in the amount of $5,000.

Matthew Vertin, executive director of the Keweenaw Health Foundation, says the money came from the inaugural Hockey for Health event at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex in November.

About 800 people enjoyed open skating and a community expo followed by a hockey game for fun between employees of the two hospitals.

The proceeds will be split between the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association and the Calumet Hockey Association.

The money will go toward youth hockey programs in the area.
