Greco-Roman wrestlers earn silver medals in NYC

Marquette, Mich.—Two United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestlers earned silver medals this weekend at the New York Athletic Club Holiday International in New York City.

Max Nowry of Wheeling, Ill., earned a silver medal in the 55-kilogram weight class. In the gold medal match, Nowry fell to two-time Olympian and USOEC alum Spencer Mango, Colorado Springs, Colo. Nowry trailed 0-3 in the first period and he was pinned at 0:10 in the second, losing the best of three series.

On his way to the silver, Nowry defeated USOEC alum Terry Allison of Team Georgia by technical fall 6-0, 7-0 in the quarterfinals and topped Isaiah Varona of Miami 7-0, 1-0 in the semifinals.

USOEC wrestler Marcus Finau of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, faced Caylor Williams of YES Wrestling in the 96-kg gold medal match. Both athletes are 2012 World Team Members. Williams took the first period 4-1 and clinched gold with a pin at 1:30 in the second.

Finau defeated Yusuke Yamamoto of Japan in the quarterfinals 1-0, 2-0 and teammate Ethan Dondlinger of Slinger, Wis., 0-3, 5-2, 1-0 in the semifinals. Dondlinger finished the competition in fourth place.

Dmitry Ryabchinskiy of Brooklyn, N.Y., took the bronze at 55 kg with a win over teammate and fourth-place finisher Isaiah Varona of Miami 1-0, 2-0.

In the 120-kg bronze medal match, USOEC teammates faced off with Parker Betts of St. Michael, Minn., taking the bronze over Toby Erickson of East Helena, Mont., 2-0, 2-0. Erickson ended the competition in fourth place.

Also competing and coming up just shy of a medal was fourth-place finisher Tanner Andrews of North Aurora, Ill., at 74 kg.
