Calumet Break-Ins
Two suspects appeared in 97th District Court in Houghton today for separate crimes, partly involving the same business in Calumet.
22–year–old Zachary Rupright of Calumet is charged with two counts of breaking and entering with intent — one at Harter’s Party Store and the other at Louie’s Super Foods.
Those felonies carry penalties of 10 years in prison.
Rupright is also facing two felony weapons charges that carry a potential five years in prison each.
Calumet Police say Rupright stole substantial amounts of cigarettes and liquor in three break-in attempts.
More than $5,000 worth of merchandise, including lottery tickets and firearms, was reported stolen in the most recent break–in at Harter’s this past Monday.
Most of the items were recovered in a search of Rupright’s apartment.
His bond is set at $10,000.
A preliminary exam was set for next Friday.
On Tuesday, the Houghton County Sheriff’s department arrested 22–year–old Jaymez Riggins after he fled from deputies while they investigated the break–in at Harter’s Party Store.
Riggins, a Washington state native currently living in Laurium, was stopped at the intersection of North Tamarack Road and M–203 in Calumet.
He’s facing multiple charges related to the chase and was also charged with three counts of malicious destruction, including damage done to Harter’s Party Store.
Riggins was also charged with attempted larceny in trying to steal a vehicle, which carries a prison sentence of two and half years, a $5,000 fine or both.
Bond was set $3,000 and a preliminary hearing was also set for next Friday.
